While remaining active in New York with The Apollo, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and teaching privately, in 2021 Tim founded PHL GOOD MUSIC, an innovative music program and social enterprise dedicated to bringing people together and generating social good in Philadelphia and beyond. Situated just blocks from the Apollo Theater, at TCCS he created a music curriculum based entirely on the musical history and socio-cultural significance of the Apollo and has since worked together with the Apollo Education Program as a curriculum writer, teaching artist, and tour guide. Shortly after moving to New York in 2009 to teach for Jazz at Lincoln Center, Tim was invited to attend Teachers College at Columbia University, where he served as Community Music Fellow and taught at Teachers College Community School in Harlem. He has performed, toured, and recorded with a wide array of artists ranging from nearly a dozen NEA Jazz Masters, to funk legends Fred Wesley and George Porter Jr., to the “Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin. Multi-instrumentalist, teaching artist, and social entrepreneur, Tim “Sully” Sullivan has been an active performer and educator for over 20 years, having lived in Chicago, New Orleans, and New York City prior to his current home of Philadelphia.

Other branches of urban music is urban contemporary and rhythmic contemporary. Latin urban can be split into sub-genres such as reggaeton and bachaton. Urban Music – The term is associated with African American music, R&B and Latin Urban. It combined older styles with newer sensibilities. The distinctive sound of New Jack Swing comes from the swing beats created by the drum machine and hardware samplers. It was the sound of the black New York club scene and fused hip-hop and dance-pop with the new sound of R&B. New Jack Swing – New Jack Swing was popular in the mid 1980’s to early 1990’s. Funk has been split into sub-genres such as electric funk and funk metal. Funk has complex groove parts with an interlocking grooves and there are rich chords used such as dominant sevenths, added sevenths and added elevenths. The rhythm is the most important part of the music with the melody and chord progressions being de-emphasised. There’s also Northern Soul which is from Manchester, Englandįunk – Came about in the mid 1960’s and was a new danceable form of music combining rhythm and blues, jazz and soul. By the 70’s soul began to split into different sub-genres, one of which being psychedelic soul which was influenced by psychedelic rock. Blues and gospel artists also seek success, but many. While significantly influenced by such sources, R&B also differs in that those songs are written with the deliberate goal of crafting a hit. Some features of soul music are call and response, catchy rhythms and stressed hand claps. Rhythm & blues also known as R&B is an African-American commercial music genre with distinct roots in traditional blues and gospel music. Soul directly influenced the music of Africa and rock and roll. It also originates from America and came about in the late 1950’s, it’s a mix of rhythm and blues, jazz and African – American gospel music. Two sub-genres of rock and roll are rockabilly and garage rock. Rock and roll had a large influence of the culture of 1950’s America as both black and white teens listened to it and it started to unite them so rock and roll was a very important part of American history. the beat has an emphasized back beat and is essentially a blues rhythm. Rock and Roll – rock and roll started around the mid 1950’s and saxophone or piano was the lead instrument in early forms but by the late 1950’s guitar had taken over.
